coromandel road tripping...

I had almost forgot about the photos I took when my mum, my sister and I went around the Coromandel Peninsula  for 3 days to celebrate her 86th birthday!  We had a ball...

On the road to Coromandel - a bit overcast but we were able to catch glimpses of the Hauraki Gulf as we travelled up the coast.

At Coromandel we decided to spend some time at Barry Bricknell's Driving Creek Railway and zigzagged our way up the mountain, constantly changing our seating direction so that we were always facing forward!  This guy has spent his life developing this place and it has fast become quite a tourist attraction, coming a close second behind the magical scenery of this area.

There was even a blacksmith working away - a dying art but not lost completely.  I'd imagine it would be quite a pleasant occupation in the winter, but summers would be a scorcher.

Had a bit of a ticky tour around Coromandel and found this jetty with this quaint run-down building.  No idea was its purpose is - nice to photograph though!

Across the peninsular, we landed at Whenuakite, our first stop for the night.  Loved the Bed and Breakfast experience - especially the breakfast part.

Carried on down to Whitianga for a quick stop - and then on to Coroglen  and the farmers market which was just about to close for the day.

Hot Water Beach, but the tide was in and there was no hot water!

Looking down onto Cathedral Cove.  This has become quite the place to visit and you can even hire a canoe and paddle yourself...

And for our second night, we stopped over at Whangamata and found a place to stay just by the estuary.

So it was time to head back to Te Aroha, but not before stopping at the Karangahake Gorge between Waihi and Paeroa.  This place has become such a popular tourist destination, yet growing up it was just a jolly annoying winding road on the way to the best place of all - Waihi Beach!!

So endeth our little road trip.  I think we shall be doing it again!
